Hands-On Science
What
is Hands-On Science?
Hands-On Science is a six-day event held at the University of Otago
every year in early January. The goal is to demonstrate, in a friendly
and interactive environment, some of the activities that scientists
are involved in and to encourage talented young New Zealanders to
consider science as a career. The school is open to students entering
Year 11, 12, or 13.
For more information about attending the next Hands-On Science,
visit the main Hands-On
Science website. Students of Hands-On Science do all sorts of
interesting and fun activities, including a project of their choice.
The Energy and Sustainability project has been run by the Energy
Studies Programme several times in past, and will be again in the
future. To find out more, check out the reports from 2002 and 2004

Hands-On Science Energy and Sustainability Project Description
2004
Energy
is essential for everything we do in our modern high technology
society. So what happens if the atmosphere gets polluted,
or the oil and gas run out? It is likely you will have to
face these problems in your lifetime. In fact, we are facing
some of these problems already - the impacts of climate change,
electricity failures and the end of cheap oil and gas are
already being felt. Come and find out how new renewable energy
sources such as wind, wave or solar power and improving the
ways we use energy can provide an answer to these problems
and a more sustainable future.
