HOW MUCH ENERGY IS USED IN NEW ZEALAND HOMES? ›

Total Energy
  • Residential energy use in New Zealand accounts for 13% of the total energy consumption in the country.
  • 13% of total energy use in 2007 = 62.8 Petajoules.
  • Most of this energy comes from electricity (69%).
  • This percentage does not include the significant portion of land and air transport energy used by the inhabitants of the residential sector.

Monitoring Energy Use in NZ homes

The Building Research Association of New Zealand (BRANZ) has undertaken a world class survey to find out how we use energy in our houses. This is the "Household Energy End-use Project"(HEEP).

HEEP was a multi-disciplinary study that monitored all fuels types, and services they provide in houses across New Zealand. Results of the 10 year study are used in this section to visualize energy used in New Zealand homes and identify potential areas of improvement. Some of their key findings indicate that the total average energy consumption per household is 11,410 kWh/year per house of which space heating accounts for around 34%. This is followed by 29% for water heating and the remainder for lighting, refrigeration, and other appliances.

Total Energy costs are summarized below:

  • Electricity (69%) = 1,592 $NZ
  • Gas / LPG (11%) = 150 $NZ
  • Solid fuels (20%) = 220 $NZ

Total Aprox. 2,000 $NZ/year per house.

Total CO2 emissions from the residential sector

  • Electricity = 1.4 tn CO2/year
  • Gas / LPG = 0.1 tn CO2/year
  • Solid fuels = 0.3 tn CO2/year

Total Aprox. 2 tonnes CO2/year per house.
