Assoc. Prof. Bob Lloyd
Director, Energy Studies Programme
Dr Bob Lloyd grew up in Adelaide, South Australia. He has a PhD
in physics from Flinders University, South Australia and a Master's
degree in History and Philosophy of Science from the University
of New South Wales. He spent a good deal of his life in Fiji, based
at the University of the South Pacific in Suva. Here he taught physics
for around 10 years and became the Director of the Institute of
Applied Sciences in 1988. During this time he was involved in a
wide variety of consulting work in Renewable Energy, Environmental
Impact Assessment, Analytical Chemistry and Oceanography. He moved
back to Australia in 1995 and started working for the Centre for
Appropriate Technology (CAT) in Alice Springs where the main emphasis
was on technology transfer to Australian Indigenous communities.
A CAT project eventually took him to Perth to work for Australian
Cooperative Research Centre for Renewable Energy (ACRE). After two
years at ACRE he moved on to be Adjunct Professor at Murdoch University
while working as a private consultant.
In August 2002, Bob took up the position of Director of Energy
Studies at the University of Otago Department of Physics. Bob teaches
several courses including EMAN 204 - Energy Resources,
EMAN 404 -Advanced Resources , EMAN
306 - Building Physics, part of PHSI
243 - Environmental Physics, and EMAN410 Energy Policy .
Bob’s research interests and areas of expertise include:
- Renewable energy
- Remote area power systems (RAPS)
- Renewable energy standards
- Energy conservation
- Energy use in housing
- Peak Oil
