Professor Gerry Carrington
ex Head of Department (Physics)
Gerry completed an MSc in Physics at Otago University in 1966 and
a DPhil in at Oxford in 1970. After post-doc positions in Oxford
and in the US, he joined the Department of Physics at Otago as a
lecturer in 1973. The first energy crisis in the 1970’s left
the industrial nations vulnerable to oil price increases and supply
interruptions and created increased awareness of the opportunities
for energy conservation and better energy technologies. Along with
other colleagues in the Department of Physics, Gerry became increasingly
enmeshed in energy problems, focussing mainly on energy services
efficiency, heat pump technology and energy management. Through
his involvement in campus energy management the University established
a company in 1988 (Univord Energy Ltd) to which Gerry provided consultancy
services on heat pump development for commercial clients. From his
teaching of thermal physics, he wrote a textbook, "Basic Thermodynamics",
which was published in June 1994 by Oxford University Press. He
took a lead role in introduction of courses in Energy Management
in 1997. Subsequently he helped organise the introduction of degrees
in Applied Science at the University of Otago, and has been the
Programme Director since 2000.
Since 1990 the main focus of Gerry’s research has been heat
pump drying technology, and its commercial development. As well
as holding the position of Head of the Physics Department at Otago
(to which he was appointed in Dec. 2002), he contributes to the
teaching of PHSI 243 - Environmental
Physics and EMAN 201-
Thermoprocesses 1.
