The sea-ice of the Arctic and Antarctic Seas exerts a major impact on the regional
oceans and atmosphere, concomitantly affecting global climate and modifying the
global oceans. It also strongly influences the ecology of the polar oceans.
Through remote sensing, fieldwork and modelling, often with a multidisciplinary
flavour, scientists are well placed to make significant progress over the next
two decades in our understanding of this vital constituent of the geosphere and
biosphere at all scales. Succeeding the very successful
'International Symposium on Sea Ice and its Interactions',
held in Fairbanks Alaska during June 2000, the overarching goal of this
Symposium is to promote interdisciplinary discussion of the geophysics of
sea ice and its interactions with the ocean, atmosphere and biosphere.
